A favourite past-time is strolling down La Rambla from Placa de Catalunya to the column mounted by the statue of Columbus at Port Vell.La Rambla is the Spanish name given to a street that was made to channel storm rains to the sea. La Rambla in Barcelona is actually several joined up streets, so in fact it is also sometimes referred to Las Ramblas, the plural of La Rambla, or in Catalan, Les Rambles. The Spanish word is derived from the 'ramla' which in Arabic means sandy riverbed.
Walking down from Placa de Catalunya to Port Vell, the names of the streets are:
- Rambla de Canaletes,
- Rambla dels Estudis,
- Rambla de Sant Josep,
- Rambla dels Caputxins,
- Rambla de Santa Monica.
You'll see:
- The flower stalls, selling unusual and beautiful blooms.
- The pet stalls, selling gerbils, chickens and even dogs.

- The street performers, although some may dispute whether dressing up and standing still on a box is a performance.
- The obligatory 'con' artists, and they are not strangers standing around watching encouraging you to bet on what pea the cup is under. They are all in on the scam, so don't really expect to win anything!
- The genuine and talented artists selling their paintings, that usually are painted in nearby studios.
- The craft stalls selling colourful trinkets.
If it is your first time in Barcelona, then staying on La Rambla, or close to it, is a great choice.
